Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro was born July 10, 1830, in St. Thomas, Danish West Indies. He is often regarded as the "father of Impressionism" and was a key figure in Neo-Impressionism. His family was of Jewish descent, with roots in both France and Portugal. Pissarro was sent to boarding school in France at the age of 12, where he developed a passion for art. He had a large family, fathering eight children, six of whom became artists. During the last twenty years of his life, he suffered from chronic eye infection which restricted his ability to paint outdoors. This led him to paint scenes from an elevated hotel room window, notably of the Boulevard Montmartre in Paris.
